March update - The Arm Collector, Silenci 2nd edition, and swordfish

Image
A detective stumbles into a reality-bending case in which she has more in common with the perpetrator than she thinks, and the sinister presence behind it all finds amusement in the things we do for love. The Arm Collector, my mystery/horror/urban fantasy short story, has been accepted for publication this spring in the Shadows & Signals anthology by  Frivolous Comma ! Make sure to check them out and follow me  Bluesky , Patreon (free), or right here to receive a notification when it comes out. I've been working on this short story since about... 2018? 2017? And it was getting nowhere so I shelved it for a hot second. It was actually the call for submissions for Shadows & Signals that reminded me that hey, I do have a spec mystery that needs polishing somewhere in there. I like to think that I know a little more now than I did when I first drafted it, so I wrote another draft and took a risk and it paid off! Needless to say, I am extremely excited to share this story...

February update - More origami, carnival season, WIP research, etc.

Image
It's been a wild couple of months, hasn't it? Okay, what have I been up to. Let's see. My wife has been doing an art class for kids and I've been showing them origami while they wait for their parents to pick them up at the end, as a bonus. Apparently the one time I didn't show up because I got caught up at work they rioted, so that was funny. They really liked this mountain goat  uhhh... bighorn sheep? that I brought for show and tell purposes. Design by John Montroll. By the way, I posted an origami tutorial on YT for another design. I'm not going to become an origami youtuber or anything, I just thought it'd be neat to make a tutorial that I could've used :') It's carnival season over here, so I'm currently holed up in my house while I hear the whole city blast music and throw paint and water at each other. I'm hoping to check it out this Sunday--I'm not much of a party guy, but I feel like I should experience it at least once. Pl...

January update - WIP check

Image
I did say I'd try to post monthly, let's see if it sticks.  First of my big WIPs is a novel set in my werewolf-ridden medieval village setting, Abadosos . Not really a sequel to Silenci, but definitely set in the same place. I may have to retcon some background things but hey, what can ya do? Thematically speaking, this novel is kind of an opposite direction to Silenci, so it was a bit wild for me to come to terms with that, lol. Progress: drafting, 50k out of... 80k? I'm not good at estimating word counts, but at the pace I'm going, yeah, it's at least 80k. Some very rough character sketches. Next up is a TTRPG campaign setting I've been working on for a couple years now. It started as a little homebrew setting for a one-on-one campaign I'm running for my wife, but what was supposed to be a one-shot turned into a three-shot and then into a years-long campaign with too much worldbuilding for a single player to explore so... here we have my take on noir urban...

Hello again, world

I'm starting this blog again. Except now it's on Blogger? Yeah. I'll be porting some/most of my old content on here, but I'll be doing it manually, so it might take a while. I also can't promise consistency, because I tend to get in over my head and stick to a strict schedule for about a couple of months and then trail off. I guess I'll post whenever I have something to say, or whenever I find something cool to share. About once a month, probably. Writing prompts are always fun, though I almost never follow my own advice and end up writing something completely different, but I don't think anyone minds but me. Maybe some book/movie/graphic novel reviews if they occur to me, even if they end up being rants more often than not. Also, don't mind the tags in this post, I'm just creating them here so I have them in mind. This is where I'll scream into the void, basically. And give book updates, of course. Wish me luck!

Ten Lyrics To Write About - Benjamin Clementine edition

I have my girl to thank for introducing this artist to me, and I think everyone should know about him. You know the drill. Roll a d10 (or generate a random number from 1 to 10). Compare it with the list below. Write something based on the result! You don't actually have to have heard the song, you can just read the quote and let your imagination fly! Share it in the comments— or not, I’m not the boss of you. When I go to bed in the night, I see some children in the light, fighting unknown shadows behind my mother's back ( I Won't Complain ) These days Hennessy dries my veins, whilst our genesis flies back at me ( Nemesis ) She said, "look at you, look at you, just pick a fleet, your cup is full, what have you not yet achieve?" Ten Pieces To Write About - videogame edition

Wooo hey, sorry about the lateness with this, I was having quite the weekend! This should serve as a lesson for myself to schedule posts more often. I'll post the flash fiction monday later in the day. Roll a d10 (or generate a random number from 1 to 10). Compare it with the list below and listen to the piece. Preferably with big comfy headphones, and preferably with your eyes closed while doing nothing else, but maybe you're time-crunched. Write something based on the piece.
